First Word Records are proud to present ‘Actions of Love’, Allysha Joy’s highly anticipated album; recorded, mixed & mastered at Abbey Road Studios.
This 11-track opus firmly secures Joy as an artist of assured heartfelt intention. Recorded live in Studio 3 at Abbey Road in London & consolidated with her own unique production style, ‘Actions of Love’ exudes pure soulful expression & raw honesty, with the message of vulnerability mirrored in the method of its making.
Ziggy Zeitgeist at the drums, Finn Rees on synths, Matthew Hayes on Bass and Joy at the Fender Rhodes while singing live all at once, together they laid the foundations for a string quartet, extensive backing vocals, Joy's own textural percussion and featured guests including Oscar Jerome, anaiis and Dani Murcia.
Following on from the themes of her previous pivotal record ‘The Making of Silk’, this new work puts love into action, understanding that grief is inevitable, justice is pursued, vulnerability is necessitated, action is required & that our humanity is realised in the joy & pain of truly loving.
The album opens on a collective vocal; “words will never be enough, I speak here with my heart and my hands, Actions of Love to move us on, move us up…” encapsulating the message, that love implores us to move beyond words into action & a deeper feeling state. Where 'The Making of Silk' asked the question, 'Actions of Love' lives inside the reckoning; ‘how do we live in an ethic of love?’
Sonically it is as forward thinking as it is a homage to Joy’s rich array of influences, whilst making space for the sound of the Studio 3 room itself. The result is classic soul songwriting, exemplary musicianship performed live, future soul production, cinematic strings & Joy’s signature textural ornamentation.
Inspired by the works of artists & literaries such as bell hooks, Stevie Wonder, Rachel Carson, Meschell Ndegeocello, Joni Mitchell, Dr Cornell West, Steve Spacek, Aja Monet and more, with deep respect to black music & to movements of liberation & leadership in social justice. ‘Actions of Love’ embodies the collective joy & grief of this moment, looking back & looking forwards to consider how we can create meaningful change on a personal & collective level.
