Once We Were (Fragments of 2011-2017) is a nostalgic journey into almost forgotten moments. Carrying a sweet memory, captured in compositions that were written many years ago. This feeling and memory has been carefully recreated by playing those pieces again and again. Taking great care to capture the pieces into a new recording, in collaboration with five string players. The EP is pure and minimalist, stripped down from electronics or ambient elements and telling the story only by the musicians playing their acoustic instruments.

The EP reflects upon the musical journey that Vermue has taken since he started composing music. Featuring a small collection of compositions that were all written before he started releasing music.

Slender, the first song of the EP features piano, viola and contrabass and was part of his Graduation project Ember (live recorded and released as EP one year later in 2018)

Once is a solo piano piece and it is the oldest composition of the EP written in 2011. If anything this piece contains a sweet innocence and nostalgia from the earlier musical journey of learning to compose music at the piano and discovering about melody and harmony.

Elegy and Left Behind are two pieces that were originally composed for a Spanish feature film ’30 Dias Antes’ in 2012. Those pieces stood the test of time and were recorded again six years later.

Memories is another solo piano song from the archive, composed in 2010 (exclusive on Bandcamp).

The artwork is an analog picture shot by Eefje Schuurkes on a misty morning in March.

Cedric Vermue is a Dutch composer and producer of neo-classical music. His work is stylized by a blend of classical styles and instruments, mostly piano and strings, combined with contemporary electronic elements. The music’s aesthetics are strongly based upon the principle of stillness and slowing down. His recent interests include analog synths, organ and Gregorian chant.
