"Fresh… for '96!" Memphistophelis by Chugga (a.k.a. Lester Fuero and Jeff Hanes) is real evil and all Memphis – a dated blend of trip-hop, 70’s disco, funk, Jeep-dub and lounge. All tracks were recorded in a single session in 1996, and mastered that same year by Terre Thaemlitz (a.k.a. DJ Sprinkles). These are those unaltered master files. If you are previewing tracks on your computer's built-in speakers and don't hear any basslines, that's because they are out of range. Use some good headphones or real speakers to hear what you're missing. Each track front-lines a massive dose of subsonic vibrations from Jeff's home-built Low Frequency Unit (L.F.U.). "When Jeff first played me the L.F.U. I just about shit my pants," laughs Lester, "That same sucker who flunked out of air-conditioner repair school with me had made the bomb!"

Chugga made their debut in 1996 on the compilation Abstrakt Workshop 2 (US: Instinct Records) with the dub-infused hip-hop break track "Old School Fattie." It was followed by the 1997 release of their first 12-inch single, "Theme For the Buck Rogers Light Rope Dance" (Japan: Comatonse Recordings), which featured remixes by Thaemlitz that went on to be cherished house classics, and was ultimately covered by the premiere European experimental acoustic ensemble zeitkratzer. In 1997 there was also a track on the compilation Synthetic Pleasures 2 (US: Caipirinha), and A Big 7-inch released in 2003 by the Austrian label Klanggallerie (also available here on our Bandcamp page - but those tracks are included in this album, so if you buy this you don't need that, and if you bought that and want this please contact us for a discount code to take your previously paid ¥700 off the album price). All of those releases were pieced together from the same 1996 Memphistophelis sessions. In 2010, Memphistophelis was finally released in its entirety on cassette by UK label The Tapeworm (well, almost in its entirety – the tape was missing "Foxy Skater").

When asked what they were currently up to, Jeff quipped, "Use your time machine to send that question back 20 years, when somebody might have cared." Chugga continue to reside in Memphis.

This is the only authorized site for digital downloads of materials by Terre Thaemlitz.

These are releases I have sold out of, but there is not enough interest for a physical repress.

Albums not listed here are likely still in stock at comatonse.com/shop.
