After my mom went to the hospital for the last time, after I travelled 2,115 miles back home, after I sat next to her with tubes and all, after I wrote her a long note that I requested the nurses read to her the moment she woke up, after that moment never came, after I flew 2,115 more miles back to my new home - I heard music again for the first time in a long time.

Like I mean I really heard music again. I remember getting home from the airport, around a little after sunset. I turned on the radio, laid down on the couch as the day faded and I was tuned in again. It sounds so cheesy but it felt like part of me returned from an extended vacation. It left overworked and full of nerves but now it was back, at ease and blissed out. Now I was back, ready to hear more.

And that’s what I’ve done for the last decade… I’ve been listening, hearing, feeling. But most of all, growing alongside this community that I’d been searching for - one that I could only find in the wake of my own grief. I owe so much of this life I get to live to my mom and to the strength she left me with 10 whole years ago.

This one’s for you mom, I hope they have cassette players in heaven.
