Map of Reflections is the first collaborative album between American artist Bill Seaman and Polish artist Monika Bugajny.
Bill Seaman is a self-taught musician with a diverse background in sound production. Bill began experimenting with tape loops and developing multi-layered compositions in a studio equipped with various tape recorders. As technology advanced, he transitioned to digital platforms, exploring sampling and MIDI through Performer software, while also working with instruments such as the DX7IIe, Akai Sampler, and drum machines. Over the years, Bill has focused on the intersection of image, music, and text in interactive works, including interactive video installations and, more recently, generative virtual reality experiences. This body of work has encompassed the creation of generative music, exploring dynamic, algorithmic approaches to composition.
Monika Bugajny is an artist and musician born in Warsaw with a diverse background, initially rooted in classical academics but continuously evolving and expanding. The experience of witnessing exceptional performances of contemporary music, alongside visual art, has been a transformative influence. These influences culminated in Monika's first project, Recytle, an album created in collaboration with Rutger Zuydervelt, which she feels truly reflects her own artistic voice. The project marked a significant shift from her classical background towards a more multifaceted direction, one that explored themes of self-definition and the search for personal identity. For Monika, music and art serve as powerful means of communication, offering unique ways to express and explore ideas. The endless possibilities within these mediums continue to excite and inspire her.
The collaboration grew from a mutual respect for each other’s work. The artists began by sharing music libraries and loops, gradually building preliminary tracks through a digital back-and-forth exchange. Once these initial compositions took shape, they explored different creative approaches. Monika recorded multiple layers of overdubbed solos, while Bill carefully sifted through them, isolating sections to allow the harmonies to coexist seamlessly.
As the project evolved, Bill added abstract electronic percussion and prepared piano, gradually editing Monika's tracks to craft complex, emotive compositions. The result is a dynamic and nuanced album that reflects their evolving artistic dialogue.
