“Phase” is a first attempt at making a cohesive record woven together with ambient sound and vocal arrangements consciously placed at the fore. A reflection of the changed lineup, “Phase” marks a distinct shift in direction for Gentle Heat both in tone and personnel, featuring Margaret McCarthy’s airy vocals effortlessly flowing between tightly-wound harmonies and abstract melodies over guitarist Joe Suihkonen’s jarring and calculated style of play. While the blueprint of Gentle Heat remains, led by vocalist David Algrim’s penchant for off-kilter melody over drummer Tim Mack’s propulsive rhythms, “Phase” pushes past the initial concept developed on the first few recordings into new terrain that is as comfortable with dissonance as it is with melody.
