As the next wave of dance dirges and industrial golden era references chug their way through the internet and into the ethos, GRYPT washes in with the charm and grandiosity of a prestige Horror film. Their 2017 single Tin Can Tomb (and other modern interpretations of hell), released through Cleopatra Records feels explicitly modern despite 80s darkwave and 90s hip hop asides. Rather than concentrating their blast of evil pop dissonance into a minimalist dance track, GRYPT uses dense layers of eerie textures that at times feel claustrophobic. The listener is granted reprieve when vocalist Romie Romak croons, belts or whispers revenge incantations over rotund drum samples. Piano tones ripped straight from a Suspense Thriller are played against screeching buzzsaw synths while bass guitar riffs lay a foundation that could serve equally well as a club song or cinematic anthem.
The epic title track illustrates vehicular suicide as a political statement and b-side “The Witch in the Woods” is (allegedly) a rejected soundtrack piece for the newest Blair Witch installment. High concept depravity has it’s own sick charm. A noisey cover of nu-metal classic “Prison Song” by System of a Down feels surprisingly apropos in it’s topical angst, featuring a guest vocal by Signor Benedick the Moor (Deathbomb Arc). Creepy dance remixes by Textbeak, 209 Sins and WMX round out this meaty single into a substantial, interesting listen.
GRYPT is a three piece, Los Angeles based team who moonlight as a band while operating as a horror multimedia group. In the past three years they have produced not only their preceding album, Thy Flesh Consumed (self released), but also two installments of original fiction entitled Tales From a Glass Crypt volumes one and two. The latter is a chapter based serial written and narrated by Romie Romak with foley and score by GRYPT. Each month, the next piece of this gross and unsettling story of family ties and blob creatures is delivered via email to GRYPT Patreon subscribers. GRYPT has also commissioned their musical services to video games and movies. These include Oculus Rift title Body of the Night, the PC Gamer featured Tonight You Die and feminist Horror short film Expecting.
GRYPT is comprised of Horror queen and trans activist Romie Romak, sound designer Taylor Shechet and occult music luminary Myrrh Ka Ba. All three are songwriters and multi-instrumentalists. GRYPT intends to keep the audience gripping their seats in anticipation of whatever they will deliver next. If it is anything reminiscent of Tin Can Tomb (and other modern interpretations of hell), it promises pleasant nightmares.
GRYPT is an unholy trinity based in LA creating music + interactive fiction:
