Foodbanks & Ferraris - Sally Ironmonger & Brian Carter
For Chris Basford
Last year at Broadstairs Folk Week, old friend and sound-man extraordinaire, Chris Basford took me aside and informed me that I had to learn this song, as he wanted to hear our Djukella derrangement. He sat me in front of a video of Sally & Brian, printed out the lyrics and showed me the chords, which left me little choice but to comply. On returning to play a set for their winter fund-raiser, the delightful lady who was assigned to look after us and give us bottles of water introduced herself as Sally, I enquired, “Ironmonger?” and she turned out to be the very same, leaving me rather star-struck.
According to Saly, it turns out that Brian saw the headline “Foodbanks & Ferraris on the Rise” in a newspaper, and the song pretty much wrote its self. Huge thanks to the inimitable Ewan Bleach for lending his sultry second-line to the proceedings.
Potent songs, silky double-bass, fiery fiddling and smoking harmonicas.
Jez Hellard & The Djukella Orchestra play a rich mongrel mix of folk music, from jigs, reels and rebel ballads to tango, rhumba and reggae.
Virtuoso musicianship, conscious poetry; from dance tunes to rebel ballads, sweet love songs to powerful politics and passionate improvisation.
