Retrieving, Listening Center's 4th album for Polytechnic Youth, is a selection of analogue synth essays recorded between 2016 and 2018. It takes a look at submerged psychic processes and the effects of elusive archetypes which are manifested in the world. Our perception and memory are repeatedly called into question; we continue to 'see' things which are no longer present, and too easily explainable artifacts continue to tug at the edges of our minds. Employing (n)ear tautologies and imaginary helio-technologies, once straightforward narratives immediately break down, and where biography meets geometry we discover a schism in certainty, illusions cracked beyond repair.
"...evocative, memorable long-form melodic evolutions that slot neatly between the questing expansiveness of 70s electronic music and the economic precision of 1981-era synthpop." (Electronic Sound)
"...a set of warmly welcoming analogue synth compositions that carry the hopes and fears of tomorrow." (Concrete Islands)
"The tone is playful throughout, dabbling into Radiophonic Workshop territory as well as all manner of melancholic 80’s nostalgia. Mason knows his machines and his material, and Retrieving is a very satisfying synth listen." (Norman Records)
Listening Center presents a patchwork of imagined pasts and futures, in which the listener can make their way through an undergrowth of dream-like melodies and electronic sound palettes which have the effect of being now reassuring, now unsettling.
