Building upon the momentum of his groundbreaking album WestWest Africa, Mausiki Scales returns with a new reflective project, Long Memory. This album delves into music’s profound ability to heal those seeking connection with their sacred histories and cultures. Drawing inspiration from ancient traditions, Scales crafts a sonic journey that pays homage to the past while shining a beacon towards the future. Long Memory is not just an album; it is a voyage inviting listeners to find solace in the Collective Memory.
Mausiki Scales, keyboardist and founder of the Atlanta-based Afrobeat/Funk ensemble Mausiki Scales and the Common Ground Collective, elevates us with Ozim!, an electrifying single from his upcoming album. Ozim! an energetic chant from Ivory Coast, West Africa—is a playful and interactive call-and-response that beckons listeners to Get Involved! The chant is supported by an infectious, funky groove and a captivating marimba melody.
Each track, from the invigorating Ozim! to the soothing balm of The Traveler, stands as a testament to maintaining buoyancy while groovin’ down the river of life and serves as a resounding call to action and alignment. Long Memory spans a wide emotional range, offering everything from lively anthems to sacred, timeless tunes for rebalancing. As an added bonus, the project features a remix of Ozim! from NDATL’s Kai Alcé, further enriching the album’s soundscape.
Mausiki’s Long Memory bears the influence of legends like Roy Ayers, Fela Kuti, and Parliament Funkadelic, yet his sound and narrative voice remain uniquely his own. He stays true to his vision—creating music that is grounded in Restoration, Redemption, Balance, Creativity & Spirituality.
Mausiki Scales & his band Common Ground Collective have been a staple on the Atlanta scene since the late 90s. With their influence of African sounds like Afrobeat and Hi-Life mixed in with Funk, Blues, Jazz and other Black musical traditions brings an unique irresistible dance filled soundscape.
