As the much anticipated sophmore release from Melo B Jones, "The One" EP proves to be a triumph, not only for South African R&B, but for the genre as a whole. In this five-track EP, the 'Boombaptist' channels strong Hip Hop influences through her intricate storytelling, firey delivery and pulsating bass driven beats.
The opening title-track, "The One", sets off the EP with a nostalgic 90s east coast Hip Hop sound – setting the tone for the rest of the EP.
We then get transported to the funky sounds of "iVibe". This track is produced by the rising star South African producer, KaeB.
The lead single, "Monate (Do It Again)", is a fun love story. Narrated by Melo B with the help of upcoming Motswako sensation, Streetz and produced by Tsukudu, its a certified banger.
As far as street anthems are concerned, "Dala" is that song. The internationally produced track - produced by an American producer, Nu Vintage – gives the locally brewed message a fresh, worldly perspective.
The EP ends with another collaboration with Tsukudu, a prolific producer in the growing urban South African music scene. The illuminating love story introduces the listener to a futuristic R&B sound but also leaves them wondering where Melo B will go next – only for the listener to want to start the journey all over again for the full circle experience.
The aptly named "The One" is an EP is a natural progression from "The Start", but is still built on the same nostalgic sound that the listener has learned to know and love from Melo B Jones.
