Philly Soul Sessions Liner Notes
Back in 2013, Nao Yoshioka's first official US performance took place in Philadelphia while touring with Ferguson, Missouri singer Brian Owens. The audience was very welcoming to Nao and she immediately felt a special connection to the musically historical city. She was so impressed with the local musicians that she promised herself that she'd return to Philadelphia someday to record an album some time in her career.
After receiving an invitation to perform at the Capital Jazz Festival near Baltimore in 2016, she brought some outstanding Philly musicians down to perform with her, and their performance was greeted with a standing ovation. The band included some of Philly’s top musicians: guitarist Dai Miyazaki (Lauryn Hill, Ludacris), bassist Jay Bratten (Drake, Jill Scott, J.Cole), drummer Bernard “Treway” Lambert (Meek Mill, Future, Floetry), and keyboardist Corey Bernhard (Talib Kweli, Snarky Puppy, Ariana Grande).
In 2019, she finally found a chance to go into the studio in Philly with her band and other world-class musicians from the very talented local Philly band Killiam Shakespeare, and with string arrangements by master musician Larry Gold (Mariah Carey, Kanye West), and the result is 'Philly Soul Sessions'.
The original songs were produced by the “King of Indie Soul” Eric Roberson (Grammy nominee) and Musicman Ty (Emmy winner: Alicia Keys, Snoop Dog). The studio tracks were recorded and engineered by Khari Mateen (Grammy nominee and Emmy winner: The Roots, Jill Scott) with all songs being skillfully mixed by Philly heavyweight Vidal Davis (Grammy winner: Usher, Ne-Yo).
“Philly Soul Sessions” is filled with the musicianship and love of music that has been passed down through the generations in Philadelphia, also known as the “City of Brotherly Love”, and will revive the passion of those who have been forced to give up live music during the pandemic.
Nao Yoshioka is a soulful Japanese singer blending modern and classic influences. After moving to New York, she found inspiration in Sam Cooke’s music, shaping her emotive style. She has performed at Blue Note NY, Java Jazz, and SXSW Sydney. In 2024, she released “Flow” and toured Europe. In 2025, she played shows in New York, Philadelphia, and Annapolis, continuing to make waves globally.
