The album was created over a period of time by experimenting in the studio with different sounds and instruments, without trying to confine ourselves to one strict genre. However, still maintaining that atmospheric nostalgic feel with post punk elements. The album starts off with our two older singles "Pod Krylom" and "Zima" which we felt should be included in order to tell the full story, and ends with an instrumental track composed entirely by our producer and keyboardist Evaldas. Most of the songs were written and composed by Masha and Evaldas, however the band would not be complete without our amazing guitarist/bass player Tautvydas who also contributed a lot to the composing process of the songs.
All the band members come from different musical backgrounds such as folk, electronic, and metal, so this definitely had an influence on the album's sound. For example in the track Bezdna, you can hear a button accordion playing, which Masha created just as an experiment at first. Elements of folk vocals are also heard throughout the album, as well as an electronic sitar in the song "Check Mate". You will also get to hear songs in all three languages on this album, some in English, Ukrainian, and Russian, which represents Masha’s complex immigrant identity.
The album name and the full story should be open for the listeners interpretation and each member of the band has their own personal relationship to the album. For the lead vocalist it had a lot to do with dealing of the loss of her home, both in a material and psychological sense, living with the fact that there is a war in her home country Ukraine, dealing with the corrupt state of the world, and trying to understand the complexities of the human psyche and its shadow. Every track will have a slightly different sound and energy to it but yet they all flow together as one piece. In the end, it is best for the listener to just read the lyrics and feel the music. The story is all there.
Pusto originated in Vilnius, Lithuania but was also greatly influenced by the lead vocalist's mixed Ukrainian and American identity, which shaped the group's vision and sound. The music draws its inspiration from the underground rock and electronic music of the 80's and 90's,nostalgic synth sounds, and life in the post soviet cities.
