Our new album has been in the cooker for quite some time now, making its way into the world slowly and more carefully than our past recordings. This one wanted time. Spaciousness. To breathe a little on its own in the studio before stepping out into the airwaves. We do our best to follow the muses and let the art out when it’s ready, and thus we are so excited to finally release this 16 song body of work. As always, the songs are a varied collection of the lives we have been living…. From becoming a mother to returning to the motherlands. From the threads of our survival from the great storms of Helene to dance parties in the streets of New Orleans. To elemental odes to the natural places we commune with to long laments for the sweethearts gone awry… this music is an honest reflection of the joys and sorrows we have been living. In many ways this work is more personal, more introspective than past albums, written from quiet and vulnerable spaces in the body and psyche, without the stage in mind. The central theme however is in continuum with much of our work, that of dirt church nature worship, banjos and ballads with strings and drumbeats to lift the spirits and move the bones. We are indebted to the work of serving the muses, our work as musicians is to track and follow the music without ever knowing how far songs will go. ravel out into the world and into the lives of people we will never meet. Its good medicine; the brewing of the bitter herbs, the making of the sweetness of song, and then the letting go.
And so, we present to you our deep labor of love; “Trade my Troubles”.
Pour yourself a cup of tea, or a glass of wine, and take your time with these songs. Let them make their way to you, from beginning to end, slowly and with attention.
The way we have worked them ourselves…
Sisters Leah and Chloe Smith founded Rising Appalachia on their back porch in Georgia, playing simple fiddle and banjo melodies and leaning into their families rich musical traditions. It has since become a globally recognized Americana and world folk ensemble, celebrating a unique blend of Southern-rooted music, storytelling, and community.
