Fun will be had!
Buzzing off the back of the release of third The Shop Window album Daysdream, lead vocalist/guitarist Carl Mann was on the hunt for a new project. His wife Kat had been listening to some of his early work, and set him a challenge to write the surrounding tracks for a dream pop album in line with the Mazzy Star inspired Ocean Blue (a song he’d co-written twenty five years ago with Kylie Minogue) with a view to pitching the tracks her way.
Four demos in and he needed a female voice to replace his guide vocals… With a little persuasion Kat stepped in, and those first tracks became the starting point of what would later become Shapes Like People’s Ticking Haze.
Together they spent many an evening going through vinyl and listening to female artists they both loved - including Alvvays, Sol Seppy, Agnes Obel, Weyes Blood, Lee & Nancy, Johnny & June, Isobel and Mark, Eurythmics, Carpenters, Jenny Lewis, Mazzy Star, The Sundays, Cocteau Twins and so on... The well of inspiration filled swiftly and new songs flowed.
As additional tracks came together Carl realised he couldn’t part with the material, and began to develop the demos into finished songs - re-recording vocals and adding his signature harmonies and guitars, and challenging Kat to push her vocals outside of her normal range.
This twelve track album nods to all of their favourites, while evolving the style and flavour of Carl’s previous work. SLP hope you love it as much as they’ve loved creating it!
