Bill Callahan commenced recording in the late 1980s as Smog. After several self-releases, he moved to Drag City. Initially, his questing, home-recorded sound and darkly dry humor drew listeners in; this trend continued throughout the 90s and aughts, as Smog issued a series of studio recorded masterpieces and toured the world in support before transitioning to his given name in 2007.
