“26-04-03 08 44 PM Something Ancient" uses multiple layers of resonance and synchronicity connecting pitch, rhythm, and duration to create the structure of its composition. The intro chords are based on the first 16 harmonics using the pitch D as a constant pivot tone. The D drone is held throughout as it becomes the first harmonic, then second, third etc up to the 16th. The notes played under and around it recontextualizes it in new sets of harmonics. Chords are built off of these just intervals, using each subsequent interval under D as the new harmonic center. Tuvan throat singing techniques like khoomei, sygyt, and kargyraa are used to amplify natural vocal overtones and undertones. Melodies from North Indian khayal singing are woven over the drones and shift while the chords move underneath. Eastern European style white voice singing is employed by Karolina Lisowski with its bright, open throat tonalities. The rhythmic speed of the delay applied to the vocals and other instruments is set to a multiple of the frequency of D. The lowest D note on a piano is 36.71hz or 36.71 cycles per second. If you bring this frequency 7 octaves down, well past the range of human hearing, the oscillation grows to 1.74 seconds per cycle. The speed of the delay time is then set to 1.74 seconds per echo repetition. Bringing this value down further to 10 octaves down, 13.92 seconds per cycle is reached. This becomes the building block time duration for the piece. 5 of those equals 1min 9sec which is the duration of each chord shape at the beginning of the piece (the fifth ‘subharmonic’ of 10 octaves below D1). Solos and other structural changes in the piece occur at ‘resonant’ times like this, multiples of 13.92 seconds. These relations between time and pitch are imperceivable for the most part but illustrate the greater themes that pitch is rhythm is time, notes are chords, as above, so below.

Theatre of Divine Resonance is a microtonal drone improvisation collective based out of Brooklyn, NY. Their compositions utilize just intonation intervals based on the harmonic series and the structures of sound itself. Elements of Indian classical khayal vocal, Tuvan throat singing, Slavic folk song, western minimalism and synth soundscapes reverberate in their mosaic of vibration. Brass, string, voice, synth, and flute unite in celestial harmony guiding your ears to the spirit realm. The group is led by composer, vocalist, improviser, Theo Woodward, who writes the compositions and curates the ensemble. Theo has studied North Indian classical vocal technique in the Kirana Gharana style for many years with Pt. Sanjoy Banerjee, disciple of Pt. A.T. Kanan and previously with Noe Dinnerstein, a student of Pt. Pran Nath. Echoes of this deep tradition can be heard in the ensemble's improvisations.
