Health and Efficiency’s opening lyrics promise something more conventionally joyous than would be expected of This Heat, but this long form track quickly switches to a relentless and muscular instrumental that feels more like a paean to the sun’s power at an atomic level.
Health and Efficiency was recorded and released in 1980 on a 45 rpm maxi single. The contrasting minimalism of B side track Graphic/Varispeed’s manipulated held organ tones were intended for playing at all turntable speeds. Alongside the 45 rpm version of this release there are now alternative versions available equivalent to 16 rpm, 33 rpm and 78 rpm.

Although widely considered to be Post-Punk’s finest, This Heat actually began performing their music in the early days of London’s punk era.
They developed new strange and volatile strains of avant-garde music that time has proved to be hugely influential, a blueprint for much that would follow.
Ahead of their time, their music is as startlingly original and relevant as the day it was created.
