Coat of Arma Statement, Take 2
Back in 2020, when I was still going by the name Ghosto, tooling around with MC Are and Brock on, what I consider my opus, āEvery Hourā, our whole approach was different - more naive Iād say. None of us are like we were at that time. After Artista came out, we were all in a bad way. We were each otherās miserable comfort and almost never left the company of one another, but we were simultaneously each otherās personal hell. There was this deadline looming over us, SUM wanted another smash hit like āRobot Boogie Bombā but we were just completely fried, and when we did have energy, it was just anger. Anger everywhere. I couldnāt say silent watching the whole Brobule alter-ego situation. It felt like history was repeating. I realized I had a demon in me.
Flash forward to 2024: I hadnāt spoken to Are or Bierly in 3 years. After daily exorcisms for about 8 months, I made it out the other end, rehabilitated. I had made a decent living making organic skincare products; hadnāt touched a mic since the 2021 sessions. One (fateful) day, I received an email from Brock, talking about a collaboration for a Make-A-Wish thing⦠with Ricky fucking Lowe?? I dropped everything I was doing and bought a flight to LA, day of. The sound was refreshingājoyous, even. And the recording experience reminded me of the good parts of the bleak years. It gave me faith that things werenāt so broken anymore.
Listening to Coat of Arma in full, it truly sounds like an exorcism. Maybe Iām biased. The textures of earlier tracks like āKrietzecoinā, āJinx Machineā and āElmer Langā give us the demonic realities of possession. Disgusting, but extremely evocative. Itās the kind of viscerality that makes you want to drag your nails across your face just to feel human again. Tracks like āKNEEHIGHSā, ā2nites the Niteā¦2 Feel Riteā and āYour Favorite Artistaā are where the angelic energies shine through. The demonic tracks are a sort of psychic assault whereas the angelic cuts reel the audience back in, signaling to the greener pastures that lie on the other side of shit mountain. To those who say this is a halfhearted attempt at putting songs from the YESFEST mix on streaming, I say keep your ears peeled for the narrative; tracks recontextualize themselves, new and old cuts alike, telling a story of deliverance; a story lived by MC, Brock, Ricky, and me.
Enjoy the ride.
