In 1998 I was starting to learn to use the basic kit I had pretty well! I’d also borrowed some money to purchase a large mixing console for the studio, so the sound got a bit of an upgrade.
I was mainly jamming with Matt, and Pete Mo would pop over every now and then.
Mid’ 1998 We met this local bass player guy Pete Middleton (who quickly got the name ‘Gurner’ due to the bass face he pulled!) Pete was well up for jamming and he knew other local jazz players, like Charlie Hearnshaw (Our sax man) and also Marie, who I was introduced to by Jan, at the local record shop. The Rurals sound was slowly changing and getting more ‘live’ sounding.
Marie had a nice ‘Sade’ type tone, which was fitting perfectly!
We were approaching the final days at the farm, as my Dad was selling up and moving on. This meant I had to start house hunting, with a plan for a new studio spot… The last summer we spent at the farm was epic though, so many good times and good music made!
Archiving all this old music is bringing back so many good feelings and memories, and it’s great to be able to share them with you all!
Big Love,
Andy Compton

People are often puzzled by the thought that the picturesque pastures of Devonshire, UK can be home to the distinctive sound of delicate jazzy beats laid over the sweetest soul-drenched vocals.
Yet, it’s true!
Since 1994, The Rurals have been perfecting a unique style of live elements with thumping electronic music from their countryside haven.
